Both machines run on Mac OS, firewalls disabled, tried connecting them using my Android phone's hotspot wifi with the same result. Ping from A to B fails on timeout. tcpdump shows that machine B does see the incoming requests. I have a home network with 2 machines connected to the wifi router.
